November 20, 2017

By now, you already know that the #TrumpTaxScam is (among other things) yet another attempt to destroy the ACA, this time by repealing the individual mandate. We have defeated each of these GOP efforts so far. And record ACA enrollment numbers demonstrate how unpopular the GOP’s attempts are.

But did you know that the #TrumpTaxScam also attacks education by eliminating key provisions that benefit students, teachers, and educational institutions? If enacted, it will:
• eliminate the deduction for student loan interest
• define tuition waivers as “income,” dramatically raising taxes for students and parents and leading to sharp cuts in graduate programs
• abolish or limit credits for children in college
• end the deduction for state and local taxes, undermining support for public education
• eliminate tax exempt bonds universities use for construction
• remove deductions for teachers who purchase school supplies
• tax university endowments
We must stop this! Check out the Activities – National section below for things you can do to oppose this pernicious bill.

And don’t forget to have a wonderful Thanksgiving on Thursday. Personally, I’m grateful for the chance to work with wonderful people as we seek to preserve the democratic institutions now under threat by the Trump Administration. Thanks to all of you for what you do!

Support the Oregon Health Insurance Signup Project

One of the activities we focused on at our meeting on November 14 was supporting ACA enrollment in the face of the Trump Administration’s effort to suppress it. The Oregon Health Insurance Signup Project (co-chaired by Dr. Smitha Chadaga, a speaker at our last meeting) is working hard to get the word out about the ACA enrollment period, which is currently open through December 15th. Please see this document for ways you can help spread the news. Contact the organizers at

Call on Fellow Progressives in Target States to Oppose the #TrumpTaxScam
From Indivisible Guide and Indivisible Oregon

Indivisible Guide (national organization) and Indivisible Oregon are collaborating to call screened constituents in key states to urge them to contact their Senators and vote against the Trump Tax Scam. You can use a super-effective peer-to-peer calling tool (which was used in the earlier battle to stop TrumpCare) and reach out to progressive constituents in Alaska, Arizona, and West Virginia. Get started now.

The calling tool will connect you to constituents in a target state and give you a script to emphasize the devastating impact of the tax bill. The tool will then patch willing state voters through to their Senators’ offices.

Indivisible Oregon will host one or more calling parties this weekend and possibly next week. Check the IO FB page for details, coming soon: And you can set up calls on your own by clicking on the link above.

Thousands of Indivisible volunteers made over 300,000 calls in September to kill the Graham-Cassidy bill, which would have destroyed the ACA. And we won. We can win this time, too, with your help.

Stop the #TrumpTaxScam – Part II
From Indivisible Oregon

Script: I’m from [ZIP], calling about the Trump/GOP Tax Scam’s attack on the American educational system. From the elimination of the deduction that teachers can take for purchasing school supplies to a new tax on tuition waivers provided to struggling graduate students, this Tax Scam is Robin Hood in reverse. It increases the taxes paid by taxpayers seeking to improve themselves and others through education and uses that revenue to fund tax cuts for the wealthiest and for corporations. I urge Senator [Wyden/Merkley] to do everything possible to derail the Trump/GOP Tax Scam. Thank you.

Hold Violent White Supremacists Accountable
From Jen’s List

Call Senators Wyden and Merkley and urge them to support the “Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act.”

Script: Hi. I’m from [ZIP], calling to ask Sen. [Wyden/Merkley] to co-sponsor new legislation by Sen. Dick Durbin. The Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act (S. 2148) holds white supremacists accountable, tracks data on violence, and helps prevent lethal events. With violent extremism on the rise, and the president cutting programs that prevent domestic terrorism, this bill is necessary to save lives. Senator [Wyden/Merkley] hasn’t co-signed this bill. Does he plan to protect Americans and do so?
